In 1987 the park has been named as UNESCO World Heritage Site, two years after the territory around sacred Aboriginal places had been given back to local people.

Uluru

These are the Pitjantjatjara and Yankunytjatjara people referred as Anangu, and at present they take care of the area with the support of Australian government, which since 1950′s actively promotes the park among international visitors. In the town Yulara, 7km from Uluru there is a new resort Ayers Rock which every year accommodates more tourists and enlarges the activities offers, which include Camel rides and night desert dining.

There is a small entry fee to the national park and besides of the rocks tourists can visit the Cultural Centre with geological history of the area, and information of Aboriginal history and art, which one can buy in the shop run by the locals.

Uluru is known for stunning changes of colour depending on the time of the day, and the most popular is watching the rock during sunset with obligatory bottle of champagne waiting for this very moment.

There are several trails around Uluru lasting up to three hours led by local gudes from the Cultural Centre.

Located about 40 km from Uluru Kata Tjuta consists of the gorup of 36 rocks with valleys and walking trails between, including Valley of the Winds and The Olga Gorge.

Climbing of the rocks, however popular is discouraged as they are the places of sacred rituals, thus are the special places to Anangu people.

While planning the trip bear in mind very high temperatures, and equip yourself with decent amount of water and necessary clothes.

In the close neighbourhood of Uluru there is a local Ayers Rock Airport, and the drive from Alice Springs takes some 4 hours in your car on aboard of one of numerous tourist coaches.

Kata Tjuta

Actually both Uluru and Kata Tjuta are considered to be sacred by local people.
The rituals and exact meaning are kept secret, one of the leaked legend tells about the king snake Wanabi, who lives in the mountains and appears to the subjects only during the dry season.

These are the Pitjantjatjara and Yankunytjatjara people referred as Anangu, who in 1985 received back from goverment the surrounding area today known as Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park.

Kata Tjuta (Kata Joota) is a group of rocks with valleys in between to waks to see, and to celebrate mysterious ceremonies, especially during the night.
It is not necessary to join these events to feel the enormous power surrounding theplace. Kata Tjuta means ‘many heads’ and so there are 36 dome-like rocks of sandstone-based mixture of various minerals, among them is iron oxide, that with the time changes the color to red.

The rocks were formed at least 540 M years ago and it is a sedimentation rock in its origins, but with some inclusions of bazalt and granite.

The Western civilisation first heard about its existence in 1872, after expedition of English explorer Ernest Giles, who declared it Mount Olga in honour of Queen Olga of Württemberg. It was an official name ( Mount Olga, or the Olgas) until 1980′s, and today is reffered with dual name, jet Anangu original name receives more popularity with every year.

Kata Tjuta is located about 55 km from Ayers Rock Airport, there are numerous bus tours from Alice Springs. the drive from Alice Springs takes about 4,5 h.

Uluru

Uluru it is a name given to the rock by Aborigens, who celebrate gender rituals in the shade of the sacred rock. It was discovered to the Western world by British-born explorer William Gosse in 1873n and named after South Australian governor Ayers Rock. At the beginning of 20th century it became the part of Aboriginal Reserve ( Petermann Reserve ) and in 1958 with the neighbouring area of The Olgas consisted the national park called at that time Ayers Rock – the Olgas National Park. In 1990′s the area has been given to local Anangu people , and the park renamed to Uluru – Kata Tjuta National Park.

The rock has been formed at least in Palaeozoic age (400-300 Ma) as an alluvial fan of a river, thus consists of amolgamant of various minerals in sandstone called arcose.
The famous red colour is connected with the presence of iron ore which oxidised into red with the time.

Due to its spiritual significance the local Aṉangu do not climb Uluru, and gently advise the visitors not to climb it either.

This suggestion does not stop the visitors, who use the chain-rope path leading to the top. Should you consider to climb Uluru, prepare accordingly to two hours climb in tough conditions. The path is also closed during the midday, when the rock temperature is too high and in case of heavy wind atop, thus the most popular is the climb around dusk time.
